embroidery on discarded fabric
THE USE OF EMBROIDERY-
I particularly wanted to use embroidery for this work for a few reasons:
Embroidery is a skill that requires a set of sharp hands, a keen vision, patience, and a layout ie. the stencil/outline. This directly correlates with the process through which making a utopian world would be possible.
Secondly, embroidery was often a skill taught to women when they weren't given the same opportunities as men. Just like then, we too are sitting ducks. That is not to say that the plight of women at the time and the need for humankind to strive towards a better future are the same but there are certain overlaps.
element of the written word-
I wanted to incorporate the written word into the work as well. I wanted it to have a darker tone and seem almost rude in contrast to the flowers. I enjoy adding elements that make no sense together in my work as it adds an element of humor or confusion, however, the viewer may interpret it. I wanted to make the pattern something one would see at their grandmother's house.
